Controlled AI Interviews are live.

Decide exactly what the interview asks, the skills, the questions, the language, then have an AI interviewer conduct it with every candidate you invite, on camera, or over voice.

AI interviews are already changing what hiring can look like. An AI interviewer that talks to a candidate, listens to their answers, and evaluates their responses can already take the scheduling and coordination burden out of the process.

Now, Xobin is pushing that idea into a new paradigm: combining the control of an assessment with the behaviour of an actual interview. Instead of a form with a timer, candidates experience an interviewer on camera or through voice that asks questions, listens to the answers, and evaluates the interaction. The structure and consistency of an assessment, with the flow of an interview.

The thing recruiters kept telling us they wanted next was not more autonomy. It was control. The skills being assessed are not up for negotiation. The questions were argued over with the hiring manager and signed off. The wording carries nuance that took three passes to get right, and the language the interview is conducted in is a decision, not a detail. An interview is only worth running if it is that interview.

So we built a way to spin up an AI interview agent that runs precisely what you specify, in the mode and the language you specify, and to have it live in minutes rather than a planning cycle. That is a Controlled AI Interview: your interview, conducted by an AI interviewer, at any volume you need.

Assessing domain depth and behavioural nuance

The useful part of a controlled AI interview is that domain depth and behavioural nuance stop being two separate exercises. A coding question and a spoken judgement question can sit in the same interview. A precise technical check and an open conversation about how someone works can be scored against the same criteria. One interview, technical and behavioural at once, at whatever depth the role deserves.

It arrives as an interviewer, not a form

This is the part worth seeing. What you write does not reach the candidate as a questionnaire. It reaches them as an interview.

The same interview, three modes. Illustrative.

In avatar mode, an interviewer appears on camera, asks each question out loud, and listens. For the candidate it is conversational, which is exactly the setting you want when communication, composure or the ability to think out loud is part of what you are hiring for. It reaches into territory that used to need a live round on someone's calendar.

Audio mode is voice only: the questions are spoken, with no interviewer video. This is the telephonic screening call without anyone having to place it, the format candidates already know, none of the scheduling, and the same call every time.

Text mode puts each question on screen to be read at the candidate's own pace, with answers still recorded to camera. It is the most traditional of the three, and it suits questions a candidate should sit with for a moment before they start talking.

Same interview in all three. What changes is the form factor you send it out in.

Decide what gets asked, Go live in minutes

You set the skills it targets, and which of them are must-haves. You set the questions, pulled from Xobin's question library, from your own, or written in your words, and the order they come in. You set the evaluation criteria each answer is scored against. You set the language it is conducted in, and in English, the accent the interviewer speaks with.

Control doesn't have to mean slow authoring. The whole thing is five screens.

Questions, not just conversation

An interview is rarely only spoken answers, so a controlled AI interview is not either. Five kinds of question, mixed in any order across your skills.

What the candidate sees, by question type. Illustrative.
  • Subjective. Answered aloud in the candidate's own words, scored against the criteria you wrote.
  • Multiple choice. One correct answer.
  • Multiple answer. Several correct answers, marked as a set.
  • Weighted choice. One pick, with the options carrying different weight, for psychometric questions where there is a best answer and a defensible second.
  • Coding. A full editor with starter code in whichever variety of programming languages you allow.

Candidates can take it in their preferred browser on the device they choose, whether it's a laptop, tablet, or phone.

Executive summary

Strong on discovery and on holding a position with evidence. The rollback answer was specific about the signal that would trigger it, not just the plan. Prioritisation answers described process more than outcome, and no answer put a number to a trade-off. Worth a live round focused on commercial judgement.

"I'd start by agreeing on what we're both optimising for, because usually we aren't arguing about the feature, we're arguing about the metric. Then I'd bring the cohort data, the last two releases where we added surface area, and what happened to week four retention..."

Evaluation reasoning

Reached both required concepts: aligning on the shared metric before debating the feature, and bringing prior release evidence rather than opinion. Did not name a decision owner or a timebox for the disagreement, which the criteria asked for.

Recruiter report. Fictional candidate, fictional scores.

A recommendation, Recommended or Not Recommended against a cutoff you set yourself, an overall score out of ten, a written summary, and the evidence behind both: every skill with its score, and every question with the recorded answer, the transcript, the score and the reasoning for it, translated into English where the interview was conducted in another language.

Alongside that, a read on delivery, an integrity score, and any flagged moment attached to the frame it came from. In scenarios where your top recruiters have a nuanced judgment that differs from the candidate's score on a particular question, they can re-score it while reviewing the report, with the score override logged instantly.

Controlled AI Interviews are available through the Xobin MCP Server, so a connected assistant can do all of this in conversation.

Describe the role and the assistant recommends the skills and drafts every question for your review. Xobin validates the plan against its own rules before creating anything, helping you build a complete interview with all the details you need, incredibly fast. The candidate link is returned in the same reply.

As results arrive, ask across the pool in plain language: who is recommended, how they scored on the skills you actually care about, who is worth a live round. The assistant fetches the evidence. You make the call. If you have not worked that way before, five things to try first with Xobin MCP is the quickest way in.

Where it fits

The useful part of a controlled AI interview is that domain depth and behavioural nuance stop being two separate exercises.

In engineering, domain specificity is most of the job. A coding question and a weighted judgement question tell you different things about the same person, and both sit in the same interview as the conversation about how they work with everyone else. In sales and customer success, how something is said carries as much as what is said, which is what the spoken modes are for. In operations, finance and analytics, precise questions and open ones can be mixed until the interview matches the actual work. For team leads and managers the questions are about judgement, and weighted choices score the distance between a good answer and a merely defensible one.

One interview, technical and behavioural at once, at whatever depth the role deserves.

Answers

Frequently asked questions

What is a Controlled AI Interview?
An interview you specify end to end, the skills, the questions, the wording, the order, the language and the mode, which an AI interviewer then conducts with every candidate you invite, exactly as you specified it.
What makes it "controlled"?
Nothing is decided during the interview. Every question, its order, its evaluation criteria and the language it is asked in are set by you before a single candidate is invited, and every candidate gets the same one.
What modes can candidates take it in?
Avatar, audio or text. In avatar mode an interviewer appears on camera; in audio mode the questions are spoken without video; in text mode each question is shown on screen to be read. In all three, spoken answers are recorded to camera.
Which question types are supported?
Subjective questions answered in the candidate's own words, multiple choice, multiple answer, weighted choice, and coding questions with a full editor and starter code. One interview can mix all five, up to fifteen skills and thirty questions.
Which languages can the interview be conducted in?
Multiple languages, including the major regional ones, with more added over time. Coverage varies a little by mode, and English can be spoken in more than one accent. Talk to the Xobin team for the current list for your account.
Do candidates need a particular device or app?
No. It runs in a browser on a phone, tablet or laptop, with a camera and microphone. Text mode is the lightest option for candidates on a weak connection.
How soon do I get results?
Reports build within about a minute of a candidate finishing: recommendation, overall score, skill scores, and every question with its answer, score and reasoning.
Who decides whether to hire?
You do. Xobin conducts the interview you specified and reports what the candidate said against your criteria. In scenarios where your top recruiters have a nuanced judgment that differs from the candidate's score on a particular question, they can re-score it while reviewing the report, with the score override logged instantly. Setting the bar and making the call stays with your team.
Can I set one up from an AI assistant?
Yes. Through the Xobin MCP Server, a connected assistant can recommend the skills, draft the questions, have the plan validated, create the interview in text or audio mode, and return a candidate link in the same conversation.
